In the 18th century clothing and accessories were hand-stitched and hand-embellished. While this is a very time consuming task, the basic skills are not complicated. A common accessory in the 18th century was the fabric wallet, often decorated with embroidery and used to carry money or small personal items.
In this class we will take the idea of a fabric wallet and adapt it to create a cute fabric envelope that would be perfect to hold a valentine for a special someone or stow a special memento for safekeeping.  You will learn basic embroidery stitches that you will use to embellish the fabric for the envelope.  We will then learn two hand sewing stitches, back stitch and hem stitch, and use these stitches to assemble the envelope.  Some people may be able to finish during class time, but for those who don't, all the materials will be provided to finish at home.

The fee for this workshop is $35 ($30 for members) and includes all of the supplies you need to complete the project. The workshop will be held at the Plantation (GPS address 3900 North Sandy Flash Drive, Newtown Square, PA 19073). In the event of very cold weather, the class may be moved to the Ridley Creek State Park mansion nearby. Tickets are non-refundable, and this class is limited to 12 participants.  Ages 10 and up.
